Henna Information

I've visited Egypt several times but the last time I went I got my first Henna Tattoo! It was done by a Nubian woman and her sister in the city of Luxor. I've always been intrigued by tattoos and found that Henna tattoos are "all natural" and temporary and ... an art form!

Background on Henna Art Tattoo's...

The use of Henna to color the skin was used in India, North Africa, Southeast Asia and the Middle East thousands of years ago. It is called Mehndi in India and has played a large role for women throughout the ages. This form of art was used to decorate their bodies primarily for spiritual and ceremonial reasons. Also, it has played a significant part of wedding rituals in many cultures.

Henna powder is made from crushing leaves of the Henna plant and then making a paste with lemon juice and essential oils. This paste is applied to the body to create infinite designs. Henna is a natural, safe product that rarely causes an allergic reaction. The color of traditional Henna art ranges from orange to reddish brown. "Black" Henna is fairly new and most contain very harsh chemicals. I prefer to use the natural products and those essential oils that are safer to the body as well as the environment.

It should be noted that Henna "tattoo" designs are temporary. They will last from one to three weeks; fading over time. Good results depend on good henna powder, acidity (lemon juice), heat and time. So treat yourself and enjoy the beauty and the ritual many women (and men) have enjoyed since ancient times!

Traditional and Contemporary Tattoo Designs can be done. I'm available for private individual consultations, parties, ceremonies or a booth at fairs. I also have gift certificates.

Scheduling and Pricing

My prices for applying the Henna designs are based on the actual time it takes me to draw the designs. I draw freehand and most designs take about 20 minutes to draw and then it takes 10-15 minutes to "fix" the henna and wrap it.

Below is a list of my rates for services.

Time Rate
30 minutes:   $25.00
1 hr or more:   $35.00/hr

Party rate: 3 or more people $30.00/person plus $20 setup fee.

Traditional and Contemporary Tattoo Designs can be done. I'm available for private individual consultations, parties, ceremonies or a booth at fairs. I also have gift certificates.

For scheduling purposes, I make the Henna "paste" up from scratch and it needs to be made up the night before to allow time setup. Therefore, making appointments to have Henna done needs to be made in advance. I certainly appreciate the advance notice too!

I work out of the Rio Rancho, NM area, so if you live further from the Albuquerque, NM area, say Santa Fe, Sedona, Taos, Tucson, (or further) I will also charge mileage unless I can set up a group of appointments together.  Thanks!
